Can't make a back up - invalid byte encoding

I just got a new My passport ultra and installed it accordingly. After finishing the installation I went on “Back up files with WD Backup”. I have the choice between My Passport and Dropbox and if I choose My passport a box pops up saying “invalid byte encoding”
How can I make a back up?

Hello,

Try to uninstall the software and re install it on the computer, hope this helps you out.

did this fix your issue? i have the same problem for over 2 months now - i have uninstalled/re-installed but didnt work for me

I am having the same issue. Was this issue ever resolved?

has anyone come up with a solution regarding this issue. ? I cant backup my files due to this error…“invalid byte encoding”…

I just purchased the Passport today, same message. Invalid byte encoding.
Uninstalled and reinstalled. Same thing.

This is just my opinion but my initial hunch was not to use WD backup for anything. I use the stock backup on Win 7 which is more than adequate. It provides the ability to make an entire system image plus it does normal backups.

From what I am seeing from WD they are creating problems by encrypting data without user input. The error message indicated could be related to their encryption methods.

I have not researched this as of yet but it appears encryption is only available on WD external drives once a password is entered. If that’s the case, don’t enter a password. Once it is entered the encryption is not removable and the drive becomes a ticking bomb. When the encryption firmware or the drive fails your data blows up never to return.

Hay! I Had This Problem Too…
It’s So Annoying That You Can’t Make a Backup.
Finely I Figured A Way Out Of This situation.
All You Have To Do Is
Go To
C\Users(Your Account Name)\Appdata\Roming\Western Degital \WD Backup
In There… You "ll find Six Files… SELECT THEM &
Delete Them… i repeat…
Delete them…
And Try Plug In Your HDD Again and make a backup…
It start to work as before
But you will see you have lost your backup settings like automatic Backup time…
But Afterall you can simply adjust that.
And Then You Can Continue Creating Backups.
Worked For Me.
Thank You.

YES!!! This worked for me and my system is now happily backing up. Thank you!

Just installed new WD Passport and trying first back only to be given same message “invalid byte encoding” - is there a simple fix?
