Can't format drive on Windows XP

I’m having trouble formatting my passport drive on Windows XP.

This drive got a virus and failed, so I wiped it clean, repartitioned it and attempted to format it as per the instructions on this site. I did the quick format, and it seemed to be ok, but then when I tried to copy files to it, it failed.

I ran a dskchk and it came out clean, so I attempted to reformat it, and unchecked the quick format option. It says it’s formatting, but it just sat there overnight and did nothing. The progress bar went no where.

Any ideas on what to do?

Did you delete the partition, and then repartition and format?

Yes, I did. And it still makes no progress during formatting. It doesn’t even sit at 1%…just nothing. When I do a quick format, it seems to format it in about 5 seconds. But then the drive fails when I try to write to it.

Hardware failure maybe?

I would contact WD for another USB cable to make sure that isn’t causing problems.  You can do so either by phone or email.
