Cannot access files stored on WD Pasport after installing Windows 10

Purchased WD Passport, Model #: WD800U017-000, during August, 2006 and promptly registered the product on the WD website. However, the support portal does not recognize my registration from 2006. I just now submitted a new registration.

I have used this product on several computers running Windows XP and Windows 7 without any problems. After upgrading to Windows 10, I cannot access the files stored on my WD Passport. When I right click on the Passport icon in Windows File Explorer, I receive this message, “The volume does not contain a recognized file system. Please make sure all the correct file systems are loaded and the volume is not corrupted.” I have been very careful about keeping the external hard drive away from corrupting forces.

Do I have to download and and install a new file system for Windows 10? How can I obtain access to the files on my WD Passport external storage?

The Quick Install Guide recommended answer ID 1286 in the Knowledge Base, but I could not locate that ID number in the Knowledge Base website.

I tried to create a case file, but could not locate a box to record the model number.

This has been a great product and I want to keep on using it.

File System optimizations for Windows 10 may not be compatible with a Windows XP-formatted unit. If you still have access to your Windows XP system then verify if the unit is still recognized on that system. If it does, then you may have to move the files to Windows 7, then format your hard drive in Windows 10 to make it backwards-compatible, and then copy the files once again.
