I have a 3 TB and a 1TB Western Digital drives attached to my new IMac running on OSX 10.6.8 3.2GHz core. Sometimes I can write to the drive, and sometimes I can’t. If I can write (they both do this simultaniously) then my computer will crash after a few minutes. then when I restart I only have read permissions. Restarting again I may get back the write permissions, but then it will crash agin.
This happens with both drives, so I doubt it can be a corrupt file or anything, because I don’t even have to be using files that are on either drive. Sometimes I don’t even get the computer on long enough to read anything! I normally only use the 3TB, that has all the primary files and the other is just back up. I have only noticed today when I starting really trying ot investigate this that I noticed the other one was always the same permissions.
I am going to post this on the Mac forum as well as I don’t know what is causing it, the only common thing I can find is that when the drives are on write and read then it crashes…

any ideas??
how did you format the drive? did you use gpt? also, how are you connected to the computer, firewire, usb? are you trying to daisy chain or are you using a usb hub? you can try changing connections (ie firewire to usb). try different cables. do you have the latest firmware update?
