Can iPods actually use mp3 files?

I’ve wanted to share some music with ipod-using friends but not one of them understands how their ipod works.  They just pay iTunes for copy-protected music.

Can anyone tell me if a modern ipod (touch, for instance) can accept mp3 files and how to do that?

Yes, they will play mp3 files. mp3 is basically universal. You would have to put the tunes on their computer so it would be added to their iTunes library, then they could sync it to their iPods. So put them on a flash drive, or on a CD, and bring them over to their place, and they should be good to go.
