Can I use the Passport Ultra for Longterm Storage of Files

I just purchased a WD My Passport Ultra 2TB external drive.

I purchased it for the purpose of moving some of my photographs off of my laptop and onto the the external drive so that I can remove them from the laptop and free up space.

Can I do this? Is there anything special I need to do to use this device not only as a backup, but also as a storage location for files I want to delete from my computer?

Thanks. I understand what a backup is.

What I’m asking is if it can be used not only as a backup, but if a portion of the storage space on the drive be used as longterm STORAGE for files. I’m wondering if it can be used for dual purposes.

If not, does someone have recommendations of a device where i can have long term file storage. Uploading isn’t a good option for me as we have very limited bandwith for uploading (it can take 6 hours to upload 30 images due to the connectivity options we have where we live).
