C: drive is invisible to WD Backup for "My Passport Ultra" external drive

Hello community, I hope you can help me.

I broke open a new box with a “My Passport Ultra” 3TB drive and installed the WD software that was on it to backup my Windows 7 C: drive to it. I used the instructions on p. 11-20 (chapter name: “Backing Up Files” of the My Passport Ultra Portable Hard Drive User Manual PDF, dated April 2015). The manual seems well-written and the instructions clear, and everything went uneventfully as documented until the point of the diagram on p. 17 (shown below from the user’s manual) that shows what one should see:

However, what I actually see on the screen is the following:

I see a label “My Computer” and that’s it! The little arrow for expanding the contents of My Computer is missing, and no drives are listed under it (I only have the one internal drive, C:, to backup).

Can anyone tell me how to make drive C: visible to the WD Backup software? The machine is not connected to the Internet–it’s old, and I wanted to make sure it was backed up before updating its security software.

Thanks.

That looks like something in the application isn’t rendering properly…

Have you restarted since installing the application? I know WD SmartWare used the .Net framework but I’m not sure about WD Backup - can you make sure that + java + etc. are all up to date along with graphics drivers, Windows updates etc. just to make sure we cover everything the application might be using.

I have rebooted with no difference. One post I read suggested making certain the WD backup service was running; it wasn’t, so I turned it on and rebooted, and now it reports correctly, but that made no difference either.

I’m trying to backup the C: drive before hooking the computer to the Internet to update its security software.

Same problem as multiple users are having (including me). Here is another thread on the same problem: WD Backup - Cannot select any folders - #40 by MmmmmS

My Windows 7 is updated.
