I have a WD external hard drive. It is the one that is all black and has WD one both sides. The hard drive fell on its side while plugged and now I am noticing a few things. Obviously, it won’t turn on, due to damaged connector.
The connector that I am talking about is from the USB port to the computer to the 6 pin connector to the hard drive itself. It is the spot just above the AC input on the back of the external hard dive.
Overall, here is my problem:
That black top that held the pins is missing. I will have to find that.
The pins and out of alignment.
My main question is , can this be repaired or placed? It is possible I can open it up and fix it myself? Is there anything that I can buy that I can replace it from best buy or something.
I would grateful for any suggestions. Thank you.
Sorry for the delay. I had to find and borrow a high res ipad.
This picture shows off what type of external hard drive I have.
I am not sure if this is the serial number, but here is something:
This picture shows in the left port of the USB to external hard drive. See how the connector is damaged. You can’t see , but some two or three pins are bent. From what I can see, 3 pins are straight. Whereas at least 2 are bent to the bottom. Plus , I think the ’ black cap’ of these pins are missing.
My question is, can I repair this?
Is there any type of specialist I can’t take this too?
Is there something I can purchase to replace this part of the hard drive.
I can see the damaged connector … (it can be repaired if you have the tools and skills)
I dissembled my My Book (as an experiment) and found the USB connector is actually on a Board that plugs into the Standard SATA connection on the Harddrive.
Which you can then connect the Harddrive to ANY enclosure.
BUT ! Because of Encrpytion you won’t be able to access your files (you will have to format the hdd before you can use it)
Can I just format it then use recovery tool to retrieve the data? or because of the password protected the whole drive was encrypted then retrieve data after format will result broken data?
As I research in the forum. that’s impossible as my drive comes with smartware that automatically encrypt the data whether there are password or not. So the only possible way to retrieve the data is replace with an identical control board or replace the usb port.
