Brand New 4gb Fuze showing FAT corrupted.

I just bought (yesteday) and new Fuze for my husbands birthday, and he opened it up and after charging it up the first message that came up was the FAT is corrupted.  After reading a few of the posts, this sounds like a very common problem.

What does that mean?  What is FAT?

I read Bob’s way of recovery, but what is MSC mode vs the other mode in an older post (MTP?).

I also tried Bob’s method, but I got an error message stating cannot format Raw.

Is this thing worth keeping?  Or should I get a different brand.  It seems like it is a nice player with a lot of good features, but … ?

Any help or suggestions.  This is brand new out of the box and already it doesn’t work.  Bad omen?

Laura

Take it back. You got a lemon. The one you exchange it for should work correctly out of the box. There is a one-year warranty on a new Fuze.

You did get a new one, right? Not a refurb? If it is a refurb, get it back to the seller FAST before the typically brief guarantee runs out.

Not to say this can’t be fixed, but you shouldn’t be having these issues with a fresh-out-of-the-box unit. Take it back and get another one. My guess is you got a dud.

And no, they’re not all that way.

Thank you, I am going to take it back.  Yes, it is brand new, not refurbished.  They are trying to sell me a 2 year warranty for it for $29, should I buy that or just take my chance?

Thanks

Those extended warranties are generally a waste of money unless the user is really rough on equipment. Is he?

SanDisk already provides a 1 year replacement warranty for FREE. So you’d be spending 30 bucks for only 1 year’s (the 2nd one) coverage. At that time in the future, you’ll probably be able to pick up another (same size) for around that same $30, or for a little more a larger and/or more up-to-date model of player.

Having worked in retail for over 25 years, I can tell you exactly why stores push these ‘extended’ warranties. And it’s not because they ae so concerned about you as a customer. They are pure profit. Competition is so stiff that nobody can make a decent margin on the product, so they have taken to selling this ‘insurance’ in order to make it up.
