Backup won't un-pause

This is my 3rd external hard drive spanning over many years so I thought it would be a breeze to get it going but I was wrong. It’s been a real chore trying to get My Passport Ultra working and/or stop working when need be.

I wanted to install the software and get it ready to use after I was done with the computer. last night I setup the backup plan for 3 days from then but didn’t realize that the backup starts right away. I stopped the process but I noitced that the light would either be on or a slow blink–I know it should be off when not in use and I did set the sleep timer.

I figured the best thing to do is to reboot the computer and give it a fresh start. From this time on, the WD logo no longer appears in the notification area and I can’t find it. The Quick View disappeared too but when I checked to see that it was setup to be on in the notification area, a popup tells me it won’t show up until it’s needed. The only thing I have to use is the backup (2 blue rectangles) that I pinned to the taskbar.

Every time I open it, I get a red rectangle, a progress bar (circle) and a message saying it’s preparing to backup. It also shows that the backup is paused and I can’t find a way to get it going again.

I have quit, deleted the backup that I started last night, and try again (3x) and get the same messages. The HD starts blinking and it appears to be copying. I checked the files and there are some in there, but if it’s saying paused and it’s copying, I don’t feel that this would be reliable because ti’s not acting normal.

On top of this, I cannot get this drive to “safely remove”. It’s not associated with any programs or open windows so I’m at a loss as to what to do.

I am entertaining the idea of either uninstall/reinstall or format the HD. I know formatting erases the files that come with the HD. I copied them to my computer and if copying them back to the HD after re-installed doesn’t work, I did see a link to get the files. Has anyone gone through this before and possibly tell me which way to go? At all costs, I do not want to restore my computer to a previous time. I have had problems with that as well.

Also, some of my icons in the notification area are messed up. A WD one is showing the icon of one of my other programs. Another WD one is showing the safe to remove icon and a couple of my other icons are messed up as well. I’ve never seen anything like this before.

HELP…Sue

Hell Sue,

On what OS are you running the drive?

Also, what’s the name of the backup software that you are trying to use?

See if you have any antivirus scanning the drive.

Hi ERmorel. I have been at this all day and I found the culprit. It’s not my Kaspersky anti-virus. To answer your questions, I’m on Windows 7. The WD associated itself with another program. I uninstalled the other program but still had no safe to remove icon. I downloaded 2 programs to take care of this and one finally worked. When I rebooted and I found I still have messed up icons, I restored to an earlier date. That brought back the safe to remove, but my WD icons are still messed up. I also noticed that the eject in the folders menu is gone (not greyed out), not there anymore. I uninstalled/re-installed the WD and that brought back the WD logo in the notification area but still no quick view as it’s one of the messed up icons. I went to start a backup and it told me to do an update, which failed. I started the backup and let it run for 1/2 hr or so and it seemed to be working… I paused it to see if resurme wiill work this time. and it’s been sitting idle for 20 mins. I then thought maybe on top of right click/resume, maybe I had to also hit backup now too. Since doing that, the progress bar has been circling for about 15 minutes and I was going to stop it and I saw the rectangular bar show up. Unless it has to play catch-up, it’s showing 0%–as if I’m starting all over again. I’m hoping a reformat will fix whatever is wrong here. I was in the process of trying to find the files (2nd time actually today) on the site and they don’t make it easy. Since uninstalling and restoring fixed some of the icons, I hope reformatting this will fix the rest of them. I even tried a microsoft repair and that didn’t work. Like I said, I’ve been at this all day. GRRR
