I have a My Passport Essential USB 3.0 with 500 Gig. I reformated the drive this morning to start a new back up. I am not even sure if the drive is backing up any data - I started the back up 5 Hrs ago. How can I tell if it is backing up?
My first question is how are you making the backup? Are you making a clean manual copy or are you using a program/software to copy the files? If so, what software?
and what operating system?

WD has a builtin software. Windows 7 operating system.
Smartware then.
Check your Passport inside computer, there should be a folder inside called smartware.swstor with the backup, if it is actually being made.
Thank you for the note - it is backing up.
I have the slow problem and I do not have the folder inside of WD_Smartware. So what now??? I tried to update software - said it did, but looking at the WD it is stil lthe old software announced - it also gives me an “unhandled exception message” the whole thing is not working! Does not retrieve at all.

You have the old version then, since newer versions of Smartware no longer use the WD_Smartware folder. You’ll have to make both a firmware update and a software update, and then start a new backup so the old files are re-categorized.
