I would not recommend tinkering with the USB settings on the PC. If you have protected media, often this requires access to the Sansa as a media device. If you wish to use MSC mode, make the selection on the device in one simple step.
Settings > System Settings > USB Mode > MSC.
You can change the communications mode at will. MTP capability is provided in the background as part of Windows Media Player.
