Alternative OpenSource backup application with this device

Hi

What OpenSource backup application would people suggest as an alternative to what’s provided?

I bought this two months ago, I really liked the USB 3, 2TB, print server features. I never for one minute thought the software wouldbe so poor =(   

I installed the software onto Win XP Home (fully up to date) and updated all firmware and software to latest versions.  The software hogs my CPU so much it makes the PC unusable. Extremely dissapointing.

I don’t need continuous backup, am happy to do a monthly/ad-hoc dump.

So I  wondered if anyone is using an alternative application. If that software is also able to backup a network drive as well that would be terrific.

There are plenty of good, free backup tools, some of which may be open source. But, none of them will unlock a locked WD drive.

So are you sugggesting if I uninstall the software I cannot use the drive?

WD’s newer drives don’t need SmartWare to unlock the drive. They can be unlocked with WD Security or Unlocker.
