I bought this 1TB My Book XHD yesterday, plugged it in today, only to find 465GB available on the drive.
Whats going on? I paid for a 1TB drive for a reason, because 500GB isn’t enough space for me. Please help, I’ve already installed updates from this website hoping that would help, but it didn’t do anything
Which MyBook? One of the RAID versions, and not RAID0 Striped?
If it’s Mirrored by RAID1, then 465 GB sounds just about right.
“1TB” = 1,000,000,000,000 bytes = 931 GB Formatted (@ 1024x1024x1024 = 1 Gigabyte)
931 GB Formatted / 2 = 465.66 GB
Curiously… If you needed 1TB, how come you bought a MyBook World or a MyBook Mirror instead of just getting an Elements for half the price?
yea I was expecting it to be around 900gb not 465, thats less than I actually need
I have no clue if its mirrored by raid or not, i’m no tech expert, I just wanted to plug and go. I bought this at Best Buy, and I talked to one of the geek squad tech ppl and they said “a hard-drive is a hard-drive” aka it didnt matter which one I got.
as it was, the only thing cheaper than this mybook was a 500GB drive or less, i never saw anything else (aside from hitachi XHD, but that was more pricey) - this was actually the cheapest 1TB drive in the store at the time of purchase- i wasn’t expecting this set back =\
ps- if it is mirrored or whatever how do i go about fixing that so I have the full 900gb capacity?
pss- mine is a MyBook Essential - so i dont see how its mirrored by raid or whatever I didnt buy the mirrored version =\
What is the model number off of the back of the drive?
i.e. " P/N: WDBAAF0010HBK-00"
wdbaaf0010hbk-01
Call tech support or the store where you got it.
No offense, but I had to check, and see that it wasn’t supposed to be a RAID drive.
I didn’t mean to be condescending, but you quite easily could have bought the wrong drive, for all I knew.
A MyBook Essentials should not be acting as a RAID array… both my 1TB drives came out of the box showing 930GB free.
I’d either take it back, or get WD to RMA it, because it shouldn’t be doing that.
Its ok, I understand, I know the likes of stupidity on the internet too; if people dont check stuff like that can and I’m sure DOES happen.
Yeah I have since submitted a report/question to the company, I’m hoping they’ll get back to me tomorrow, since today is Sunday. I really hope I dont need to return it, what a pain in the butt that will be =\
oh well, thnx for your patience and help anyway~
It just seemed more likely (based on general internet experience) that it was an ID10T error, and not a simple matter of a 500GB drive being installed in a 1TB case in Thailand. I thought that’s what all the barcodes were supposed to prevent happening.
So now I have to go hunting for that mythical 500B Essentials with a 1TB drive in it.
The RAID drives are labelled as 1TB, but due to the RAID1 functioning, you only have access to half-capacity, so it seemed likely at first (since there’s so many different types of drive sold under the “MyBook” name) that you had inadvertently bought a RAID system… I wouldn’t put it past some salespeople to sell a more expensive drive when it’s not what the customer wants/needs.
BestBuy should be able to do a straight swap for you, I’d think.
Try to determine the model number of the drive inside the box.

its ok the company already told to return it as it was defective. i now got myself a 2TB hitachi XHD which works perfectly!!

The GEEK SQUAD Strikes Again!!!
I’m not against BEST BUY, but I wonder what type of training is given to the GEEK SQUAD. I have seen more mistakes and erroneous information given by this group then by any other. I don’t think they are dumb, I just think a good number of them just don’t care. Is it a listening issue?
The exact same thing appears to have happened to me. Got my brand new MyBook home, expecting the advertised 1TB of space, and found it to only have 456GB free. Looks like I too, will be returning my drive to BestBuy. Doubt I’ll be getting another western digital drive.

Their probably selected like the salary help where just retired. A) they need some kind of college degree and B) they know a little about computers. Programmers for the CNC machines had the same requirements.
