1TB WD elements drive is locked when it mounts

I bought a 1TB WD elements drive and when I plugged it in, the drive is locked. It didn’t prompt, it just loaded up and nothing can be copied on to it. Tried 3 different machines and still locked. Tried loading Smartware and it doesnt allow you to change settings. Suggestions welcome.

Thanks for responding Wizer. Could you suggest how I go about resolving permission problems? I’m on a mac and I do the most obvious which is ‘command I’ on the mounted drive and under Sharing & Permissions its says "you can only read’ .

In this case you need to format the drive

the unit comes formatted for windows which is read only on Mac

format the drive and then it will be good to go

If you want to use on both Mac and Windows leave it formatted NTFS and use software on the Mac http://community.wdc.com/t5/WD-Portable-Drives/unwritable-drive/td-p/435872 see post 6 for some suggestions.
