I use Piriform Defraggler and was defragging my My Passport drive yesterday and my laptop began began beeping every 20-30 minutes: first an occional beep, then it changed two beeps in quick succession, again about every 20-30 minutes.
This morning, after reacivating the laptop from sleep (the defrag was still running), I immediately heard two sets of two beeps in quick succession. Thinking it was a laptop issue because it was my laptop beeping, not the external drive, I stopped the defragg and ran a Windows memory diagnostics but it didn’t find any errors. Since rebooting five hours ago and listening to music directly from my external drive, copying over files, etc, it has been running fine so far with no beeping. (I did not run the defrag again). I also ran a complete drive test via WD Drive Utilities and it passed. Therefore, I’ve concluded that the problem is directly linked to defragging. I assumed it was safe to do this occasionally, or am I wrong?
Advice/suggestions welcome.
