Got a new Sansa Fuze+, charged it for 4h via USB (display came on when connected), updated firmware, tried to power on — no dice! Then tried soft reset (twice). No luck then, either. Have I got a dud unit?

Don’t know if this post/thread is similar to what you’re decribing, but it may help. If not, you may indeed have a dud and should return it to your dealer for another one.
