Crazy Idea...

OK, so looking at the Clip+ I’ve fallen in love…with the exception of the limited capacity. So I had a pretty crazy idea…

Would it be possible to use something like this: http://www.pccard.co.uk/adapter/mobidapter.php and attached it to this cable: http://www.jqsabers.com/new-micro-sd-card-extension-cable/

Then take a 160GB (or other large number) USB stick and connect it to it formatted as FAT32 like so: http://www.online-tech-tips.com/computer-tips/formatting-external-hard-drive-to-fat-32/

Then use Rockbox (to get past the file and size limits)…do y’all think that’s at all feasible?

EDIT: I found a good cheap MicroSD extension cable!!

all I can say is -----try it—sounds like a good plan to me.—

I don’t know whether your idea will work or not, but Rockbox, as good as it is still has database limitations. The Clip+'s limit is +/-8,000. Rockbox’s is 10,000.

Is there any way at all to bypass the Rockbox file limit? Whether there is or not could you give me some more info on it? Thanks!

EDIT: After doing a little bit of digging around…I found this: http://download.rockbox.org/daily/manual/rockbox-ipodnano1g/rockbox-buildch8.html#x11-1420008.5.3

And this: (talking about the D2 but I think it’s the same idea)

Q. Will Rockbox have any limit for amount of files on the internal/external memory like Cowon’s firmware has?

A. There’s no limit for folder-based browsing. If you use browse for files by ID3 tag (using the Database function) there may be a file limit imposed by the database.

It sounds to me like the only limit is in either A. The number of files within 1 directory or B. The number of files allowed in a database. So if I used the file browser, and put each artist in a seperate folder, the limit would then be 10,000 ARTISTS right? (Since they would all be under the main Music folder.)

Is that correct or am I missing something?

There is no database limit in rockbox, although somewhere around 100,000 files I think the load db to ram option will stop working since the Clip+ doesn’t have all that much RAM. Edit: you’re probably thinking of the maximum files per folder setting. Theres no limit on how many folders you can have though.

Another excellent reason to use Rockbox…to eliminate that annoying database refresh.
