First charge and battery life

So I toyed around a bit with my news Sansa Sport prior to fully charging it (adjusting settings and copying music). My question now is: How important is charging first before doing anything with the device? What effect does not doing a full charge first have on battery life these days?

I’m not aware that it does (that is, that there is an issue)–but manf.'s tend to note that a device first be charged before use, presumably because it is unknown how much charge a particular device may have when its box is opened, and the manf. would not want the device to power down when first turned on or in the middle of some important initial task (such as a firmware upgrade).

Not at all important, makes no difference.
