How to repair micro sd 16gb card? It shows 31mb

I have just received used HTC HD2 from ebay. It has original micro sd card 16gb. But the HTC does not whant to recognize this card. Every time when I insert it, the device ask me format it. And if I agree it shows a message after a second that format was successful but I can see this card in phone.

I tried to read it using car reader on my pc. Some readers cannot see this card, but some can see and ask format it, when the format dialog is appeared is shows that card has only 31mb of storage and I can format it in fat or ntfs. But if I click format I’ll see the error message. Also I try to insert card into Nokia N96. It also can see only 31bm can format it and I can write something but cannot read. If I turn off the phone and turn on it again, or release insert the card the phone asks me format it again.

No one utill like sd formater or hp cannot format it. Anybody knows what to do?

PS

I found the deleted topic on this site in google archive. Someone has the same problem as me. Here the description of the problem

My PC is XP SP3 and use Windows Media Player 11 to sync my Fuze. The Fuzeis 4G and is firmware version 02.02.26A. I recently purchased a Polaroid brand (didn’t have sandisk brand)  16gb micro SDHC for it. When I put the card in my Fuze didn’t recognize it until I upgraded the firmware to the version listed above. The Fuze will only format the card to a 2gb capacity. I went ahead and did it anyway hoping it would show 16gb instead of 2gb…stupid I know. Anyway, afterwards I attempted to re-format the card on my computer using one of those flash drive style readers. When the format dialog came up my only options were “FAT” instead of “FAT32” and a disk size of 30mb. I cancelled it and now the computer will not recognize the card unless I unplug and replug the drive…doesn’t matter whether or not I removed and re-inserted the card.

How do I get the card set up to work with my Fuze?

Do I need to get a “proper” card reader in order to format SDHC cards?

Beware of cheap cards being sold on Ebay. Many are fake. Apparantly there are those who try to pass off old low capacity cards as 16 GB cards. Some cards are listed as 16 Gb, which means 16 gigabits, or only 2 gigabytes. Many are fooled into thinking this means 16 gigabytes.

Thanks yes I know. I read alot of information about it. I wanted to buy 32gb micro sd card but now I dont.

But this is original SanDisk card wich goes with htc hd2 with serial number.

Did you try formatting the card in your pc using the card formatting utility? http://www.sdcard.org/consumers/formatter/

Yes I did. It shows 31mb too if card is visible in card reader and if I try to format I can see the message that card is write protected but it don’t. The switcher on the card holder not in write protected state.

I have the same problem with a 2GB Sandisk MicroSD Legit boxed purchase from a supermarket. It was fine, showing the full 2Gb and happily accepting files. A month later Neither my linux nor windows XP machine report the card as having a partition table and also report the unformatted size of the disk as 31MB meaning that I cant dd a copy of the data off the device. The Panasonic SDFormatter software reports the card as 30.6MB. Is there a fix that will restore the previous state or at the very least let me format my 2GB card to more than 1.5% of its nominal size?

possibly worth mentioning that this card has not been used in any phone or media player, just proper card readers attached to desktop computers.

do a google search for “hp disk storage format tool” download that and use it to format the card. if it does not fix it the card is bad and will need to be replaced.

nope the HP tool also reports 31MB.

I guess the card was just faulty, rather annoying that it didnt fail untill the returns period was up.

Me too. 30.6MB and nothing helps

yea i had this problem it’s an issue with the adapter i think. but i fixed mine, and got it to show my full 16 gigs. i plugged it into a phone while it was on then rebooted the phone and then took it out and put it back into my computer and made sure the mini card was VERRY snug down in there and i flicked the lock mechaniaim a fiew times(not sure witch one of these things did the trick but one of em did)  i’m using the scandisc tool now,

yeah… i guess i shouldn’t have tryed to format it with my stupid computer hahaha

maybee flickering the locker on the adapter did the trick.

it could have easily been pluging it back into the device. you CAN get it to show 16 once again tho

ok this did not work.

i get it to see 14 gigs of my 16 but i can’t use it still. foooie

  1. something GB is what will actually show for a 16GB card. it has to do with the “some capacity is used for formatting and other functions” you hard driver is the same for instance if you have a 80GB hard drive it will show as 72GB or something usable space

i bought a 16gb micro sd card one off ebay and it will let me store files on it but does not support some files my 2gb one supported, and as i try to format the memory card it also wont let me do that, what do u think the problem is.

hope u can help, cheers (the1withnoname)

As mentioned earlier in this thread (and many others), we’ve been hearing about a lot of fake/counterfeit cards being sold on eBay recently. You should check the card out with h2testw and if it doesn’t measure up file a claim immediately with either the seller or eBay’s Resolution Center to get your money back.

Ok here is how i fixed the fake 32gb micro sd card that i got off of ebay… do a google search for… “hp drive key boot utility” (the name of the exe after extracted is “hpdkbu.exe”(i have windows 7 and the utility would not install on my system if this is the case for you as well just click extract instead of install and run the exe that i just mentioned) hopefully you have a usb adapter… plug in the adapter run the utility select the drive letter for your micro sd that is in the usb mine was “e”… click next…  then select create new or replace (its already checked) hit next…  select hard drive(its already checked) hit next… select create new file system(its already checked) hit next… then it says something at the bottom then says formatting…

here is the weird part of the tutorial the program stops responding… dont sweat it just end task it… now go to my computer and look at your properties for the drive(should say 0 free 0 used)… now right click on the drive and select format… you will notice now that the capacity has changed to what it should be just format it and you are all set good luck and hope this tutorial helped…

And just what would that be considering it’s a _ fake _ 32GB card, 2 or 4GB?

I guess that all depends on what the original size of the card was before they flashed it to 32gb mine happend to be 4 which came roughly to 3.24 with that stupid extra space required for the format so mainly I lost 28 gigs or i could just say i got a 4gb card for free however you want to look at it since i did get my money back for it anyhow…
