Extreme FireWire Reader: number of cable pinsOptions
05-21-2008 07:29 AM
My laptop only has a 4 pin firewire port. Unfortunately, the SanDisk website does not state how many pins the Extreme FireWire cables have. The B&H website states that the SanDisk Extreme FireWire reader only supports 6 pins and 9 pins. But SanDisk technical support emailed me that the FireWire reader comes with 2 cables, one with 8 pins and the other with 4 pins, so it would work with my laptop with only a 4 pin FireWire port. Is that correct? Has Sandisk made a recent change to the pin number? Thanks.

05-21-2008 07:42 AM The reader comes with two cables, one cable has a 9 pin end (FireWire 800) and the other cable has a 6 pin end (FireWire 400). You can not use the reader with a 4 pin port because that port does not provide power to the device.
The SanDisk rep was just probably confusing FireWire 800 and FireWire 400 and just using the numbers for the pins.
