Formatting infected usb disk

Hello im an average level pc user and sometimes i perform a few maintaning tasks for a friends portable pc. He was being infected several times from virus.vbs.small.a and i just found out it was because his usb disk cruzer micro 1gb capacity had already been infected and was passing the virus on to the computer every time i had cleared it. Im wondering if i can format the usb disk without any problem or consequenses. He does not remember if he had gotten a software disk with the usb disks purchase so id like to know if formatting the disk with the built in windows-xp disk management program will make the usb disk stop being recognised from computers or if it just needs some autorun program to be copied onto it after the format. Thanks for any help in advance.

Re: Formatting infected usb disk

You can format the flash drive using the Windows Format option with no problem.  Obviously anything that is on the flash drive will be erased, but so will the virus.

Re: Formatting infected usb disk

My experience with formatting - 1 GB Cruiser become 512 KB.
