Free Music Downloads

So I know everybody is looking for cheap or free music for legal downloads, and I have posted a few links over the last few months and thought it was time for a thread.

Here is a list of sites I frequent for freebies:

  1. www.Frostclick.com

  2. www.jamendo.com

  3. Roadrunner Records

  4. Amazon Free music and Special Deals

Frostclick is a way to get all kinds of media, including Music, Movies, Software, E-Books, and Graphics, licensed under the Creative Commons License, which makes it free.

Jamendo is an international collection of Artist who release there music thru CCL there are thousands of artists and albums on there.

Roadrunner is one of the US oldest and most diverse Independant Record Labels. they Also give you a free album when you register for their mailing list, As well as a free song for download from most of their artists.

Amazons Free and Specialn Mp3 deals, is what it says, they give out free singles from up and commers in the music industry and discounts on albums from the music staples we all love.

A few more independant record labels who have some free mp3s on their websites:

Sub Pop Records (free music availible includes songs by The Thermals, Flight of the Conchords and The Postal Service)

Matador Records (free music availible includes songs by Mogwai and Guided by Voices)

also there’s RCRD LBL, which features about 150 or so free, legal MP3s by several notable indie rock bands like Beach House, Why? and Late of the Pier. All music availible on this site is availible with permission from the musicians and/or the record label although not all artists featured on the site have mp3s availible to download, only streaming, but most do.

Thanks Doc. I just found another one as well. Rock Proper Recordshas a few out there and add a new free alum every month it looks like (I just found it myself). Check it out.

FYI the alums on the column at the right are the freebies.

Just found this one…

It is verboten everywhere.

I would delete that post but… I dont have that option.  Torrents can be legeal but the deal is the content in the torrent has to be licensed for sharing or you have to pay for it.

People get confused all of the time with the word “Torrent”.  Torrent’s per se are not illegal.  A torrent is a delivery system, that’s all.  Just like CB said, it’s the content contained within the torrent, where the problem lies.  If the content was obtained without permission from the copyright holder, it is indeed illegal.

With that said, there are plenty of legal torrents.  Take for example the last 2 releases from the group ‘Nine Inch Nails’ (Ghosts I-IV and The Slip) were legally trasmitted over the internet via torrents.

But, unfortunately, there is far more illegal content being shared via torrents than legal; so the word ‘torrent’ gets a black eye.

Frostclick and Jamendo (Posted above) both offer legal torrents. Licensed under Creative Commons, which makes it free and legal.

A new one I found and has TONS of stuff.

Legal Torrents

Well, CB and GB, I stand corrected

I was under that impression that they were all piracy…my bad.

We both know that’s what the original poster (that brought up the “t” word) had in mind, though

Found another one! Its all Legit. I checked!

Free Albums Galore

You classical music fans will like this one! I saw, Hayden, Shostakovich, and Mahler, just at a glance. And Scrolling thru a little more I see Mozart, and Puccini, as well as Schubert and Vivaldi. All this is intermixed with Hip Hop, Rock, Pop, Indie, Country, Electronic, and stuff that not even the Pros can classify. I think I found a new favorite for the Obscure freebie albums.

Im having a pretty Good day for Free Tunes!

These are from Amazons Free music

Eagle Records Live At Montreux 2009 Sampler****

Tomorrows Stars from SxSW

Sub Pop Amazon Sampler****

711 more Free Songs

I really Really Recomend the Sub Pop Sampler and the Eagle Records sampler. Both are Awesome!

I mentioned The Internet Archive on another thread so let’s put it here too. Also, do check out the Other Music Sources page on the Free Albums Galore link provided by CB for a lot of other sources. Their first listing:

The Internet Archive - The ultimate source for open source audio, long out-of-print 78s, netlabels, and live music.

It also has Audio Books & Poetry.

NPR’s Live in Concert from ALL SONGS CONSIDERED

Quite a good number of full concerts. All available for streaming and many (but not all) also available for download in single file podcast form. Subscribe to their RSS feed to get notification as concert podcasts become available. Right now they have a lot of stuff from the current SXSW.

Its cool, but if you are wondering the Torrents are completely cool, no viruses or junk. Its all completely legal, and on the Up and Up. I downloaded all of it and it works great.
