SMART attributes on the Sandisk Extreme USB3.0

Does anyone here know what these attributes mean?

171 Unknown\_Attribute 0x0002 100 100 000 Old\_age Always - 0 172 Unknown\_Attribute 0x0002 100 100 000 Old\_age Always - 0 173 Unknown\_Attribute 0x0002 100 100 000 Old\_age Always - 1 174 Unknown\_Attribute 0x0002 100 100 000 Old\_age Always - 32 230 Unknown\_SSD\_Attribute 0x0002 100 100 000 Old\_age Always - 3 234 Unknown\_Attribute 0x0002 100 100 000 Old\_age Always - 2

What attributes, Old_age?  Unknown_Attribute entries look like file names.

The attribute ID is the first column and attribute name is the second column. The question is what do these attributes mean because their values are changing, which means that the firmware is finding a condition and updating the counters. Here is the full set of S.M.A.R.T. attributes:

# smartctl -a -d sat /dev/sdb | sed -n "/ATTRIBUTE\_NAME/,/Total\_LBAs\_Read/p" ID# ATTRIBUTE\_NAME FLAG VALUE WORST THRESH TYPE UPDATED WHEN\_FAILED RAW\_VALUE 5 Reallocated\_Sector\_Ct 0x0002 100 100 000 Old\_age Always - 0 9 Power\_On\_Hours 0x0002 100 100 000 Old\_age Always - 164 12 Power\_Cycle\_Count 0x0002 100 100 000 Old\_age Always - 188 171 Unknown\_Attribute 0x0002 100 100 000 Old\_age Always - 0 172 Unknown\_Attribute 0x0002 100 100 000 Old\_age Always - 0 173 Unknown\_Attribute 0x0002 100 100 000 Old\_age Always - 1 174 Unknown\_Attribute 0x0002 100 100 000 Old\_age Always - 32 187 Reported\_Uncorrect 0x0002 100 100 000 Old\_age Always - 0 230 Unknown\_SSD\_Attribute 0x0002 100 100 000 Old\_age Always - 3 232 Available\_Reservd\_Space 0x0003 100 100 005 Pre-fail Always - 0 234 Unknown\_Attribute 0x0002 100 100 000 Old\_age Always - 2 241 Total\_LBAs\_Written 0x0002 100 100 000 Old\_age Always - 123149066 242 Total\_LBAs\_Read 0x0002 100 100 000 Old\_age Always - 236337679

Unknown attributes are typically either vendor specific or unsupported attributes. Either way they are not an attribute that affect the overall life span of the device.

yeah, these attributes are most likely vendor specific and firmware is definitely changing them. So, someone at Sandisk knows what values are being published in those counters.

Does anyone from Sandisk monitor these forums? do you know what these attributes mean?

Mostly users but if they are vendor specific they are likely unpublished.

Does anybody know what kind of write endurance is guaranteed on the 64GB Extreme?

Is it using MLC or TLC NAND?

What do it’s SMART attributes show?

Check out the post above. The SMART attributes are not useful because they are named as Unkown. If they were named properly with better names, I would not be posting here… The information there is definitely changing, so the firmware is exposing those counters. I just don’t know what they mean.
