New USBs Not Assigning Drive Letters

Hello,

I have two new Sandisk Cruzer USB drives (32GB and a 64GB) which do not automatically assign themselves drive letters, and thus do not automatically appear under Computer. I am fully aware of how to manually assign drive letters to them, however this only works for the computer they’ve been assigned on and rarely works the next time around. These drives are used on 15+ computers, so this is not an option for me.

Both drives have been reformatted multiple times in an attempt to fix the problem. They are currently formatted as NTFS and marked as active partitions in the Drive Manager, they just don’t have drive letters. This is the same setup used on my other Sandisk drives. The moment I assign them a drive letter the problem resolves itself, but as I said I am not going to assign the drive on every computer in the lab.

Suggestions are much appreciated.

Danielle

USB drives do NOT assign themselves drive letters.  The OS does that and Windows is notorious for assigning the same drive letter to multiple devices, even if they are totally different.

What else do you plug into the machines same USB ports?  See what drive letter gets assigned to them.  Then when you manually assign a drive letter to the new USBs assign them something different.  And assign different drive letters to each of the two new drives.  ie if you assign G: to the 32MB one, assign H: to the 64MB one.

As you have found formatting USB drives for the most part is a waste of time.

Try this: http://www.getusb.info/review-usb-scrub-cleans-your-registry-of-old-usb-sticks/

It is essential for public PCs , cybercafes or intensive use of USB ports.
It is a complement to CCleaner.

   ¡Hola!

JaJaJa!!! Feliz vida de cibernauta!!!

   Hello!

The dilemma of the Cybernauta and your errant Pendrive.

When will use public PCs, from cybercafes, etc., to prevent problems, we must check the equipment [BEFORE placing the Flash Driver (UFD) Unit].
If… you have to spend a small (~ 20 minutes), to put the PC “under” and avoid major headaches and losing much later.

So job security have to do.
This gives you security in your passwords, via email, etc.
So you can have peace of mind, because you will not infect your flash drive, or transmit the infection to your home PC.
So you can have peace of mind, as well, your UDF (5 volts DC) will not suffer from over or under voltage.
Is it so complicated? Well… is ‘like crossing a street’, we must be very attentive, nothing more.

a- The cybercafes have the ‘soft DeepFreeze’ and the PCs are ‘frozen’ (ideal for Home). So before you start, restart the PC manually.
This makes all subsequent to ‘freeze’ manipulations that made the same Technician, deleted, (hey, sometimes they do not well …I found frozen virus…). It’s wonderful, but… if you’re working with Word 80 p. and the PC just shuts down or restarts for any problems, you lose all…
By this, then some have their PC without Cyber total freeze, ie, have the C Disco (system) frozen and unfrozen Disco D (My Documents, etc.).
You have to check you in ‘every case’. And in the second case, you have to erase what you did, but it will be available to the next user…
Then the second case, it is the most comfortable, but the most dangerous because there will nest Virus, Trojans and Keyloggers.

b- PCs Public Offices, Universities, etc., have ‘Restricted User accounts’ password. So you can not install programs (or virus, etc.) without permission of the Administrator. Then not clean, restart, log PC, manipulations, intensive use of USB flash drives, Internet junk, as in cybercafes. You must verify ‘every case’.
But… ‘if you can’ install programs, fonts, keyloggers, etc.
How? Well, so ‘temporary’ in RAM memory (electric).
So are fashionable Portables earnings [P], and these are what you’ll need to use a Pack prepared by you and stored in the Web ‘somewhere’ (no mail, password theft).

Well … You see, what is ‘be very careful’…
Then, after identifying ‘the case’ of the PC on which you will work, and then you want to leave without any bad consequence, you must do the following:

1- Antivirus. Not rely PC if it has one, for there pack blocking the virus and prevent its update. So you see it is, if you can update, and scan your PC.
If you can not, you spend some antivirus ‘Online’, or any Portable downloads etc.
Meanwhile, you can see the Firewall, if enabled and if there is no ‘rare entry’.
In addition, see also the “Task Manager” which processes are running and learn with experience what are the ‘necessary’ and what to delete.
You can also get in the “Market for used”, pendrives [U3 Smart] with the possibility of having to Avast! included and still support.

Since then, “You already have a” ‘Personal Pack’ tool (free) Portables on the Web, with the following utilities:

2- You pass the [CCleaner], clean trash full PC, you verify that programs are installed, which are loaded at Home, etc.
3- You pass the [Scrub Cleans USB], USB and clean the garbage.
4- You pass the [RegSeeke], to clean deeper.
5- You pass the [CleanAfterMe], by NirSoft . At the end of your work do it again…
6- You pass the [Win Recover].
7- You pass the [WriteProtector], read only momentarily until you see it’s all good.
8- You puss the [USB Deview] and [USB Driver Letter], by NirSoft, your UFD to operate quietly.
9- You pass the [Spybot S & D], to step resistant Trojans and see the restrictions made the administered to the registry.

Well, at this point, as you “encariñaste with the PC”, you will understand the advantage of choosing “always the same”, because you know that it has “frozen Virus”, the Mouse ‘doing well’, the screen is clean, for you the cleaned and regulaste the Brightness and Contrast to your liking, the keyboard works well, it has good capacity RAM, USB ports ‘going well’ because you verified your all, and the temperature is just this with:

10- You pass the [AIDA64, shareware], and you check the (USB 5 volts) voltages, temperature, if you walk the coolers, etc.

Just now, I encourage you to put the Pendrive (in the PC), which [of course] and I have an “exact clone” in a safe and Backup your content at home and on the Web.

JaJaJa!!!  Cibernauta happy life !!!
