Slow to wake from sleep

I talked to Apple, and had a subpar experience. The first level tech had me check a bunch of things, and the issue replicated fine on a bare OS. I got passed to a second level tech… who said that because I’d replaced the hard drive, they wouldn’t support OS X on it. This is a new policy (or perhaps they were just trying to get me to go away), but rather annoying as at that point we didn’t know if the issue was a bug in the drive firmware or in the OS X ACHI drivers.

I just called Sandisk, and it turns out they’ve replicated this issue at least with OS X, though I don’t know what hardware they tested with. They’ve escalated the issue internally to their R&D team. There’s no ETA yet, as they don’t know the root cause, but at least there’s some hope of a fix. I was super impressed with the call; one menu and I was speaking to a person who seemed knowledgable.

If anyone reading this can replicate this and hasn’t called or emailed in, I’d say it’s worth doing as it might help them solve the problem, or at least know it’s impacting a larger range of customers.

Hi,

Thanks for the update. I am still experiencing the problem and awaiting a fix from Sandisk. As I mentioned previously (which is a long time ago now - 25th Feb!) they closed my case after stating that development was working on this issue. So I’m pleased they are still on the case and I’m looking forward to a fix. (I hope a firmware fix is possible as if this is it is a low power state SATA high speed serial state machine issue, it might be a silicon fault…)

Regards,

Peter

Same problem. Really anoying.

Not only this problem, I found that my ssd also make noise especially when I download something. It is really weird that why my SSD drive produce sound just like HDD drive.

HOPE THERE WILL BE SOME FIRMWIRE UPDATE SOON!

Does anyone else have the same problem?

I have same issues.

I replaced a Extreme II 240G SSD for my macbook pro 13" 2011 late, the model is MD314.OS X is 10.9.2.I have made a pure installation from apple recovery online, and upgraded all the last packages from Applestore.

Everything is OK except waking from sleep. The MBP is freezed, after about 30-45 seconds,it comes into the desktop.I have another SSD plextor M5S 256G,It’ll take about 5-10 seconds waking from sleep.and a Sumsung 830 128G,It wakes from sleep immediately.

M5S and Extreme II have a new function ‘DEVSLP’,I think it may cause the issues.

I hope this problem could be solved in the future.

Hi, same issue here. I have a macbook pro running OSX Mavericks. It takes about 30s to wake up…

This is really annoying…

Hope it will be fixed soon.

Hi,guys.I wrote this issues to Sandisk, and they answered:

Thanks for emailing SanDisk Technical Support. It is our goal to make sure you have all the resources you need to get the most from your product.

Regarding your issue, please be advised that this issue occurs with other brand SSD and HDD as well.

Unfortunately, there is no fix for it.

As far as we know, Apple only support drives that are pre-qualified in their systems.

If you have not installed TRIM, we recommend you to do an online search for available tools to install TRIM and see if this can resolve the issue.

If this solution does not work, then there is no other ways to resolve the issue. For the inconvenience caused, we sincerely apologize.

Meanwhile, as this is an issue of incompability, please note that SanDisk does NOT replace the product for incompatibility issue.

In this case, we recommend you to use this SSD on a compatible device.

So they think this issue is apple’s duty. But I want to know how can they say ‘this issue occurs with other brand SSD and HDD as well’?There are so many reports that other brand SSD is working fine.

I don’t think Sandisk want to solve this issue.

I agree, my other SSD’s work fine and ONLY the SanDisk has this issue (for me).  I even have their replies saying that they are working on the issue, quoted below.

Best regards, Dexter S. SanDisk Technical Support Customer By Email (Bryan Parke) 03/20/2014 03:11 PM I’m glad to hear that it is being worked on. The delay is 30 seconds typically, it takes less time to boot from scratch than it does to wake from sleep. It is very bothersome. I’m looking forward to getting a solution. Thanks.  Based on their replies I was still under the impression that they were working on it.  But based on what you heard it sounds like they are not.  For all others reading this, I have had several SSD’s including the OWC brand and NONE of them have experienced this startup lag issue, ONLY the SanDisk. So please don’t believe SanDisk when they say all other drives experience it.  They just aren’t taking ownership and are refusing to do the right thing.  I will never purchase their products again and I will continually advise others to do the same.

I have the slow wake from sleep issue on my MacBook Pro 17" with the SanDisk Extreme II SSD 480GB (using revision R1311). There does not seem the will from SanDisk to correct this issue, but they’re perfectly okay with the continued marketing and sales of the drive.

SanDisk, you need to do the right thing. Either come up with a fix, or take care of the customers who bought your drive by offering refunds or replacements. It’s the right thing to do.

Just saw this on the apple forums. Has anyone tried updating to OSX 10.9.4? Do you still have issues waking from sleep? It seems some updates are applicable to this wake from sleep issue.

http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1754

"The OS X Mavericks 10.9.4 Update is recommended for all Mavericks users. It improves the stability, compatibility, and security of your Mac.

This update:

Fixes an issue that prevented some Macs from automatically connecting to known Wi-Fi networks
Improves the reliability of wake from sleep

10.9.4 didn’t solve the problem for me. I’ve changed my laptop to only use hibernate for sleep. I figure if I’m going to wait for wake I may as well not burn battery while asleep.

sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 25 # To hibernate to disk only.

sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 3 # The default “safe sleep” for portables with sleep + hibernate as a backup.

At this point, I’m pretty hesitant to buy future SSDs from Sandisk given the lack of movement on this issue :frowning:

What is the model number of the mac you are using?

same problem here

using macbook pro early 2011

with 8gb ram

2.2ghz i7

sandisk ssd extreme pro 480gb

it’s only a week old and i’m having this problem

always a 20-30 seconds delay when waking up

i’m on mountain lion 10.8.5 … did a clean install and it didn’t fix the issue.

Join the sad club. The only suggestion is a workaround, I am using hibernate instead of sleep, which for me (haswell, UEFI + Win8.1 on Dell) halves the amount of time it takes to come on (somewhere between 5 and 10 seconds.)

P

so appreantly i had the extreme II and not the Pro.

did someone experience the problem with the Sandisk Extreme PRO ?

model number: SDSSDXPS-480G-G25

MBP 15" late 2011 i7 2,2gHz 8 GB

Mac OS 10.9.4

SSD Extreme II 480

  • takes 20-30 seconds to wake after sleep. Same syptoms as earlier in this topic. Did many various procedures as described in forums, no luck… Following thread hope to get wiser…

I got an answer from SanDisk support:

“The Extreme II SSD is shipped with latest firmware and there is no upgrade needed. The Slow wake-up from low power state is a known issue in the Mac OS 10.9 and it has been addressed in the latest update of OS Yosemite. Please verify that SMART status for the SSD in Disk Utility is “verified” and that you are not facing any other performance issue except slow wake-up.”

  • no other suggested solution or work-around, just to wait for the next OS…

…but I’m currently testin the Yosemite BETA and unfortunately the problem is still there…

Just upgraded to public beta 2 of Yosemite, and still having the sleep issue. Did Sandisk support actually say it was supposed to be fixed the current public beta, or is it planned for the next release?

IMO

  • Only this SSD exhibits this problem in both Windows and OSx, making it unlikely to be fixed by an OS upgrade.

  • This appears to be a problem with the SSD; related to DevSleep on the SATA link.

  • Sandisk are aware of the problem and have been since Jan 2014.

  • They have not issued a firmware fix, which suggests to me it is something related to silicon, like the serdes.

Remember this is just my opinion…

Peter

" it has been addressed in the latest update of OS Yosemite. " they said. Now I bought this disk a week ago and I’m gonna return it, get money back and head for another brand. Any suggestions? Aiming at a Samsung SSD 840 EVO…
