Ok,  I just purchased my 1GB Sansa Express yesterday.  I was very excited to try it out.  When I got home, I plugged it into my computer and that's when the fun started...

First off,  my computer saw it immediately as an MTP device, and in the device manager it put it under Portable devices with MTP as one of the labels.  However, it wouldn't work!  I couldn't locate it in My Computer, nor did any of my music synching programs work.  In Device Manager it showed the device with the yellow exclamation mark.  I checked the properties and it gave me a Code 1 error,  device not configured correctly.

I worked with it for a good couple of hours trying to determine why my XP Pro wouldn't install it properly.  Finally I did the following steps and it worked immediately!!

  0. Plug the Sansa Express into a USB 2.0 slot
  1. Open the start menu and right click on My Computer
  2. Click on properties
  3. Locate and click on the "Hardware" Tab of the system properties window that pops up
  4. Find the button that says "Device Manager"
  5. When you do this, another window will pop up with a list of all of the hardware installed inside of your computer,  you should see the Sansa Express somewhere in this list with the yellow exclamation mark.
  6. Right-Click on the Sansa Express and click on "Update Driver"
  7. When the next window opens up,  instead of allowing it to search automatically,  click on "Install from a list or a specific location (Advanced)"  and click next
  8. On the next window,  click on the last option "Don't search, I will choose the driver to install" and click next
  9.  When I did this,  it had two options listed.  MTP Device and USB Mass Storage Device.  If you see these options highlight the USB Mass Storage Device and click next.  It should install Immediately!!

I sincerely hope this helps anyone,  I searched and searched on line for an answer, and I couldn't come up with anything.  I fiddled around with it for a long time.  Thank god I got it to work!  :smileyhappy:  Good Luck everyone!!

Joshua,  You are my hero!  Thanks for the post.  Your instructions were easy to follow and they worked!  I was getting an  "INF is invalid" error message with my recently purchased Sansa C250.

Not sure if my situation was unique or if perhaps you forgot a step, but I would add step 8.5 and step 10 to your instructions . .

8.5 After completing step 8 I got a long list of options.  I clicked on 'Portable Devices'.  I then got the options listed in step 9.

10 This installed the driver, but I had to unplug and reattach my Sansa C250 for my PC to install the MP3 player.

For others reading this, Joshua's great instructions are below . . . good luck!

that forces MSC mode... that will not allow you to transfer MTP content (Such as Napster/Rhapsody Music Subscriptions)

My Sansa Express worked fine for the first 10 days then started getting MTP installation error messages.  But, I noticed that the Sansa Express was still working with a different computer of mine.

Snooped on the net and found that some other mp3 players had this problem and were fixed by simply re-installing windows media player.  I did it and it worked!!  All is back to normal now.

Joshua,

I've tried your solution, which was very easy to follow. But I keep getting an error message from Microsoft on the driver. It's telling me it won't install the driver because its not digitally signed to be compatible with Windows XP. The driver is version 5.1.2600.0.
Even if I tell it to install it anyway, it won't.

If it makes any difference, I'm using Windows XP, and just upgraded to Windows Media Player 11.

Does anybody have any solutions?

Sue

Unfortunately, I've not found a fix for that error.  Ironically, the driver in question is one that Microsoft wrote for Windows - and they're signed.  So, Windows has essentially forgotten how to authenticate its own drivers!  Microsoft has a few pages on this in their Knowledgebase, but the last time I tried to sort this issue out, I decided that a full reinstall would be easier and faster (after trying five or six troubleshooting steps first.) :smileymad:

I haven't had any problems. :smileyhappy:

In the Device Manager, Sansa Express shows under Portable Devices.
I use XP Pro SP2. I registered with Windows Update Wesite and frequently get updates automatically.
www.update.microsoft.com

To check your Driver Version and Driver Date:-
Right click on 'Sansa Express' show the new window 'Sansa Express Properties'
Clicking 'Driver 'tab show:
Dirver Provider: Microsoft
Driver Date: 2/22/2006
Driver Version: 5.2.5326.4762
Digital Signer: Microsoft Windows Component Publisher

To get matching drivers:-
In the 'System Properties' click 'Windows Update'
Select the button for "If my device needs a driver, go to Windows Update without asking me"
or the button
"Ask me to search Windows Update every time I connect a new device"
Click 'OK'

Also have a look 'Automatic Updates' tab in the 'System Properties' and select the one you prefer.

The way to get it to work and still have it mtp is to removed windows media player from windows components (in the add and remove software) and also in the add and remove software if it is there as well.  Then reinstall it (I install version 11) from microsoft.  After that it worked fine.
